Experience from the sea Enniberg, Fugloy or Svínoy
The Northern Islands are known by the high and steep mountains and a rich birdlife. One of the world’s highest promontory is Enniberg, raising 754 m. from the sea, situated on the northern point of Viðoy and it is the northernmost point of the Faroe Islands.
Birdcliffs are often dominated by a single species of birds. A colony of birds often nest very closely. Years back the birdcliffs were an important foodsource for the local people. The eggs were collected during a short period of time and the adult birds are caught in June and July. To catch the birds, the faroese used a so called “Fleygastong”. The birdcatcher found a safe place on the cliffs, where the ind blowes in the right direction, so the birds fly towards him. He rackets the birds and catches them in the net. Today the birdcatching is continuing just to preserv the tradition.
