Arrival at Vágar Airport. Pick up your rental car at the airport. After check in at Hotel Føroyar, go for a walk around Tórshavn and enjoy all the Christmas lights. As you wander through the houses in the old town, you will discover a web of lanes and passageways, stairs, protruding rocks and tiny black-tarred houses with white windows and grass roofs.
End the day with a visit to one of the cafés or bars and chat to the locals.
29 December: Scenic villages Tjørnuvík and Saksun.
Take advantage of the daylight and drive to the small villages of Tjørnuvík and Saksun. Tjørnuvík, surrounded by steep mountains and offers a fantastic view to the impressive rock formations the Giant and the Witch. Saksun is a picturesque village where the bay used to be a protected natural harbour, but today is the entrance to the bay blocked by sand. At low tide, you can walk along the sand out to the ocean.
For dinner, we can recommend Restaurant Áarstova, a true gem. It is a charming place with bare beams, small door openings and crooked angles, situated in a protected building in the old town. Definitely the place to go if you want a cosy atmosphere and good food.
30 December: Explore Tórshavn and shopping.
After breakfast, it is time to explore Tórshavn. At the far end of the marina is the shop Østrøm where you can look at and maybe even buy, some of the modern Faroese art and handicrafts. Other interesting shops to visit in the city center are Tutl that sells Faroese music, Guðrun&Guðrun who sell knitwear in the latest Faroese fashion and Marjun Heimá that has specialised in producing the Faroese national costume and you can see a very nice display of these in the shop. On the walk around town, you will pass by the quaint old bookshop, which is definitely worth a visit.
For dinner, we can recommend Barbara Fish House, Katrina Christiansen, Frumbiti, The Tarv and Fútastova. All restaurants are in city center.
31 December: Culture and New Year’s eve celebration.
About 20 minutes’ drive from Tórshavn, you will find the village of Kirkjubøur, which is the Faroe Islands’ historical and cultural centre. See the picturesque old farm that is home to the Patursson family who for 17 generations have run the farmstead and ecclesiastic site. See the unfinished Magnus Cathedral and the small medieval church of St.Olav.
- Participate in the New Year’s Eve dinner at Hotel Føroyar. 5 course dinner and music entertainment and enjoy the spectacular view over the city at midnight.
1 January: Hiking and relaxing.
As January 1st is a holiday and shops and museums are closed, we suggest a nice walk. Close to the hotel, you will find very nice waking trails – the reception at the hotel will be happy to suggest walks in the nearby area.
If you want to experience Faroese hospitality, you can pre-book a visit with a local family in Tórshavn. Feel the atmosphere and enjoy the storytelling about the Faroese and about the local community while enjoying a cup of coffee or dinner.
