Winter wonders

Due to their position in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands are distinguished by their changeable weather throughout the year. Experience the Faroes in the darker winter months and see for yourself, how it is nature that decides. The unpredictable weather creates a magical and dramatic light that gives the most fantastic motifs and a chance to experience an amazing Faroe Islands photo safari.

    • START DAY: Thursday
    • SEASON: September to April
    • DIRECT FLIGHT FROM: Copenhagen (incl. in the price)

Program: Fly and Drive 6 days / 5 nights

THURSDAY: Arrival to the Faroe Islands. Enjoy the stillness and the magnificent views.
Arrival with Atlantic Airways to Vágar airport. Collect your hire car at the airport and check in at your accommodation on Vágar.

Spend the night on Vágar.

FRIDAY: Vágar Island – magical scenery.
Explore on your own, discovering the magical scenery and pretty villages in all colours of the rainbow on this little island in the North Atlantic. Visit the unique village of Gásadalur, one of the most photographed places on the Faroes, with its attractive waterfall. Make sure you see Bøur village, which has a quite fantastic view of Tindhólm.

If the weather permits, then we suggest a bracing walk to the largest lake called Leitisvatn and then out to the Bøsdalafossur waterfall. From here, you can see the dramatic western side of the island.

You should definitely take the opportunity to drive from the village of Sandavágur out towards the impressive rock formation known as ‘Witch’s Finger’.

Spend the night on Vágar.

SATURDAY: Unique villages and landmarks.
Check out and drive through the sub-sea tunnel to the island of Streymoy.

We suggest driving to the remote villages of Saksun and Tjørnuvík, both of which offer wonderful photo motifs. Saksun is a picturesque village where the bay used to be a naturally protected harbour, but today the entrance is blocked by sand. When the tide is low, you can walk out to the sea.

Cross the bridge that connects Streymoy and Eysturoy and continue towards the village of Tjørnuvík that is surrounded by sheer mountains and has a unique view out to the rock formations Risin and Kellingin. On the tour will also pass the impressive waterfall, Fossá. Later in the day, drive to Tórshavn where you will stay overnight.

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

SUNDAY: Fotostop at Sornfellið, Norðadalsskarð and the Nordic House
Drive from Tórshavn over the mountain road ‘Oyggjarvegur’ to enjoy the view across the world’s smallest capital and the nearby island of Nólsoy. Continue to Sornfellið (547m) and Norðadalsskarð (277m) to soak up the calm, the views and not least, the amazing nature.

Back in Tórshavn, you can visit the Nordic House and maybe have something to eat in the attractive little café. The Nordic House presents various exhibitions, music and a whole host of other events throughout the year.

End the day’s adventures with a brisk walk and a chance to take the last pictures of the day around the area called Gamla Hoyvík.

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

MONDAY: Explore Tórshavn and the historical and cultural centre of the Faroe Islands.
Exploring Tórshavn will give you many great photo opportunities, as you wander through the old part of town, between small black houses with grass roofs, called Reyn and Tinganes. Maybe you will meet the Prime Minister or one of William Heinesen’s ‘Lost Musicians’. See the Cathedral and pretty Vágsbotn harbour where you will find Kaffihúsið, a café we can warmly recommend for lunch.

Make sure that you have time to visit Kirkjubøur, the historical and cultural centre of the Faroe Islands. Here you will find the picturesque Kongsgárð, where the current ‘King’s Yeoman’ is the 17th generation in a row. See the unfinished St. Magnus Cathedral and the little Medieval church.

Spend the night in Tórshavn.

TUESDAY: Departure from the Faroe Islands.
Check out and drive to the airport, deliver the hire car and departure with Atlantic Airways.
